English

We are a large faculty of specialist teachers with the passion, enthusiasm and energy required to pass on our love of English literature and English language to our students at The Sutton Academy.

This year we moved to a new part of the school which we now share with the maths department. This exciting Super Core development is extremely well equipped with brand new facilities including interactive whiteboards and an amazing Super Core Learning Plaza. We are also extremely fortunate in English to be supported by two High Level Teaching Assistants who play an important role in helping our students make progress.

Key Stage 3

Our students are set on entry which is then reviewed regularly throughout the academic year. We track students' progress through on-going assessments in reading, writing, and speaking and listening. Throughout Key Stage 3, students learn to write for a range of audiences and purposes as well as producing creative writing. We read a range of texts from different genres, promoting debate and understanding around spiritual, moral and cultural traditions and issues such as Anti-Semitism and Jewish beliefs and culture through The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas. Furthermore, our activities allow all students the opportunity to communicate in different size groups through discussion, debate and role play.

Each student has a Key Stage 3 assessment portfolio which allows us to provide personalised intervention, and to support students in achieving their learning targets. We also provide specific literacy intervention for students requiring additional support.

We use various strategies to allow all students to realise their potential in achieving their target grade and make progress. This includes peer and self- assessment, discussing targets with students and the steps they need to take in order to achieve them

Key Stage 4

We offer GCSE English, English Language and English Literature and students begin their WJEC examination courses half way through Year 9. We have two tiers of entry, Higher [grades A*-E] and Foundation [grades C-G]. Throughout Key Stage 4, we continually monitor and analyse students' progress and aptitude carefully to decide on the best entry tier for each individual and to ensure students make at least expected levels of progress. We feel this course prepares the students well for their chosen pathway to further education or employment.

We also offer GCSE Media Studies which is a popular option subject.

Key Stage 5

We offer a range of A levels at Key Stage 5.
AS and A2 English Language and Literature (WJEC)
AS and A2 English Language (AQA Specification B)
AS and A2 English Literature (WJEC)
AS and A2 Media Studies (WJEC)
