The Drama Department is a highly energetic, creative, inviting and inspirational subject here at the academy. Drama plays a central role in bringing together a wide variety of students, teachers, parents and members of the community to celebrate the wealth of talent we have here. We strongly believe that Drama is essential in building confidence within students, not just for performance but within their everyday lives. We also believe that Drama isn’t just about acting and performance - it is a vital tool for the exploration of the world around us.
Drama and performing arts is taught as a discreet subject across all key stages, benefitting from 4 specialist drama teachers. We have 2 teaching spaces fully equipped with an LED lighting rig, sound system, black box theatre facility - with seating for approximately 200 people.
The drama department prides itself on the quality and scale of work that is produced every term. We work closely with our other expressive arts departments - including music, art and dance - to create high quality, full scale productions.Read more...

In year 8, students go on to explore the world of ghost stories, urban myths, survival, Romeo & Juliet and film & t.v. genres. Year 9s currently follow a BTEC first Certificate in performing arts and study a range of plays including ‘Blood Brothers’ and ‘The Stones’. This qualification also offers students 2 additional options they wish to study from Music, Art or Dance.
At key stage 4 we currently offer a BTEC First Diploma in performing arts (acting) - which is the equivalent of 4 GCSEs. This qualification covers a wide range of topics including:
Performing scripted plays
Professional development in the Performing Arts Industry
We also study GCSE Drama (Edexcel) - which follows a 3 Module course of study. These modules include:

Drama is a very popular subject within our 6th form college, where students undertake a BTEC Level 3 Certificate in performing arts - they have the opportunity to study a wide range of units including:
Theatre in Education
Theatre for children
Performing to an audience
Applying acting styles
Film and TV acting
Auditions for Actors
Extra-Curricular and outside the Classroom
The Drama department has a well established and thriving drama club, which meets once a week to produce commissioned performances. They also contribute significantly to the Academy’s large scale, whole school productions.
Our Drama department has excellent links with our local primary schools and offer a number of activities through our work with BTEC students - who cover theatre for children and theatre in education modules. This includes inviting the children into our Arts Centre to engage within drama activities or our staff and students visiting their primary schools to offer drama workshops, performances and workshops.
Our A-level and GCSE Drama students look forward to an annual overnight visit to Stratford-Upon-Avon, where they can visit the houses of Shakespeare and Anne Hathaway and explore the historical town of Shakespeare’s birthplace. They can then enjoy an evening meal in the centre of Stratford before going to watch the Royal Shakespeare Company at The Swan Theatre.
The National Youth Theatre & The National Musical Youth Theatre Auditions
This year we have entered a number of extremely gifted and talented students for National Youth/Musical youth theatre auditions at the Lowry Theatre in Salford. The students are guided and coached through their audition pieces, then chaperoned to and from their auditions by a member of the Drama Department.
We pride ourselves on consistently excellent examination results and the strong contribution we make to the lives of young people in terms of their performance futures. We are committed to guiding and supporting our students through school and college life into promising and rewarding futures - at university, further education, training or even in TV!
